I really love Louis De Bernieres, I think any of his books would be great for this. I'm not sure if they count as "unsung" classics, though.

The Shawn Colvin cover of This Must be the Place is also delightful in a whole different way than the original. Especially as used in the movie Wordplay. Gives me little shivers of melancholy, ya know?
