I haven't actually seen Rings (and I don't intend to because it sounds pretty bad) and I believe you that it rips-off elements of It Follows - just thought it was worth mentioning that there's likely a more-complex relationship between It Follows and the Ring/Ringu movies than just your average 'movie X influenced

I maintain that A Beautiful Mind is a decent movie, mainly because it revolves around (spoilers, I guess?) an uncommonly relatable and poignant depiction of schizophrenia. Yes it has some gag-inducing sappiness, but that aspect has been partially redeemed in my eyes because I also watched it with DVD commentary from

But also in all fairness, I do feel like the premise of It Follows was strongly influenced by the premise of The Ring. Now the apprentice has become the master, etc. etc.

Well in all fairness, how many filmmakers haven't stolen something from Kurosawa? What? Oh right, the other Kurosawa…

Yeah I was gonna say… I think it's worth pointing out that this cartoonist - R. Sikoryak - has been doing stuff kinda like this for decades (even before the internet was much of a thing). The main idea behind his earlier work, it seems, was to combine familiar, vernacular comic-book imagery with classic literature;

No joke, Buzzfeed actually publishes a lot of solid political reporting. And, as a Teen Vogue writer pointed out today on Twitter, some of the best political journalism lately has been coming from fashion magazines.

I know those words but that comment makes no sense.

This is more of a jump-scare thing, but one of my favorite horror film-going experiences was a packed screening of Audition - basically the audience was quiet until one particular moment (if you've seen it you know) where it felt like everyone shrieked in unison.

I was just thinking of The Descent, which I just saw for the first time recently (in a theatrical screening). Definitely one of the, uh, screamiest screenings I've been to.

It's kind of heartening though, that even with all the turmoil in the world, we can still count on things like teenagers going to horror movies en masse and acting like idiots.

Are you sure that wasn't a deleted scene? Serious question because I don't remember.

For such a good band Depeche Mode has a lot of godawful album art.

You'll dance to anything by Day-Pesh-Commode.

I don't know what you damaged people are talking about. My personal Jesus - Trump - is the sweetest perfection, and he'll never let me down again. Nothing's impossible!

Well they may be old, but they've been putting out good music recently, like Playing the Angel - that just came out, right? Also, what are these weird brown spots on my skin? And, where did my hair go?

I've never actually read a Sparks book, but in my mind I pictured him as a sort of genial guy who might approach his storytelling in a friendly, home-y way. Like 'Aw, shucks, I just enjoy lighthouses and people falling in love and stuff.' The idea of him being a pretentious dip who compares himself favorably to

Fun fact: the literal meaning of 'schmaltz' (which is, of course, a Yiddish word) is 'rendered chicken fat.'

…consecutively?

Can't weigh-in on any Kardashians, but I think it's worth noting that - judging from her Twitter feed - Chrissy Teigen is quite smart and funny, and not afraid to talk about politics. Also not afraid to smack down idiots who seem very disturbed that a pretty lady might have opinions on things or say things that they
