I always thought that John and Paul got used to writing half an album each (more or less), so that when it came to having to write a full album for their solo careers, they struggled. Some immortal songs, a few half-arsed ones.

Gary Glitter was big, briefly, but he was never taken seriously, even in the shallower end of pop. Not much more than a novelty act, really. To his credit (can't believe I'm writing that), he seemed to be in on the joke and played up his ridiculousness.
