i was hoping the girl in the first one was gonna behead the first row, but instead it was a slightly-tougher version of ribbon gymnastics. those people are obviously good at something, but without another person in front of them it's basically just dancing. not that i'm sort of tough-ass, but i've seen mma guys take…
dreams was also my first kurosawa. i was heavily into anime and ray bradbury short stories at the time, so i was well-primed, but it was exactly the foreign nature of it that made me interested in seeing more of the director's work. sure, there are a few clunky parts, but the first half is unimpeachable (pun intended).
boris at the 930 was one of the loudest, best shows i've seen in ages.
did i mis the dreams thread?
i know it's not "essential" in the way that the five listed are, but a few of the pieces (shit, all but maybe three of them) are excellent and would serve as a nice gateway for people who might be reluctant to start off with a three hour black and white movies with subtitles.
put museman on suicide watch!
sword of doom.
sigh… fuck you, hoodwink.
@crunchy- because you typically have to dedicate a lot more time to a book. if i watch a 90 minute movie with a dumb ending, i'm disappointed; if i read an 800 page novel with a dumb ending, i'm totally pissed.
this is where the whale tracks down the japanese guy who killed his mom, right?
oh, wait- that was the krilling. nevermind.
because of subway justice's icon, dogg.
wow, that got a little crazy. all i was trying to say is that i was struck by the fact that a GAME so dominated this group's lives that it seemed to be the only thing they had to talk about. obviously these games are very seductive to a certain type of person, and that doesn't make them inherently bad, but it does…
GET ME SOME MORE EFFING ICED TEA, EM-EFFER!
i enjoyed it, although i wish it focused more on larp culture as a whole than the two main assholes in particular (although the blond dude actually seemed okay in normal life). dunno about other gamer movies, but mark barrowcliffe's memoir the elfish gene is worth a read.
sounds kinda like the king of kong
in other news, a few years ago i was with some friends at a late-night diner when three nerdy thirty-something white dudes get seated in the neighboring booth. after a while, i started tuning in on their conversation, but literally could not figure out what they were talking about…
@subway justice- johnston checks in is the funniest shit on the internet (now that achewood has fallen to pieces)
now all they need is a kim kardashian guest spot
and three of the things i care least about in the world of pop culture will be in one horrendous package!
yeah, i had a tough time with that, too.
actually, the first entry is one of my all-time favorite bad movies, so you should still netflix it (then watch it with friends and your preferred intoxicant)
the first three luna albums are excellent; i could make one disc best-of for the other four (and it would be majority rendezvous). i honestly haven't cared much for dean and britta's stuff, but if i had realized they were playing g500 stuff, i definitely would've seen them. crud.
