I first saw Deadwood a few years after watching Slings & Arrows, but your comment makes me realize why Al talking to the Indian head seemed so familiar.

I think, unlike most current TV shows, Slings & Arrows is jumping into the middle of the long character arcs of Geoffrey & Ellen, and coming in at the end of Oliver's, so there's a fair amount of set-up to do in terms of establishing relationships & events that happened ten years ago.
