I was going to post an insightful and amusing comment about this Newswire item, but, for some reason, lately I can't shake the feeling that the A.V. Club isn't reading what we write here.
If you're counting her time in the Runaways she might be first. However, Tina Weymouth wins cutest lady bass player since she I don't remember her ever going for "hot" as a look. If I'm wrong I'd like to borrow any photos of hot Tina Weymouth anyone might have …
DBT's - "Ronnie and Neil" and "Manuel/Danko" and "Carl Perkins Cadillac." There's probably more …
Thanks, I didn't know that.
I'm not sure I agree with you or Nathan. Granted, "Rapper's Delight" was a rip-off, right down to the lyrics, but this wasn't the equivalent of Pat Boone taking Little Richard songs to the top ten. It's not like NWA was out there but Sugarhill watered it down so white people would like it. "Rapper's Delight" is…
She was a cool, cool lady. Anyone who has "Love is Strange," "Rapper's Delight" and "The Message" on his or her resume is entitled to maximum respect. And that's not even considering having the NY Dolls quote "Love is Strange." R.I.P.
OT: I just read that Sylvia Robinson died. A very cool lady. RIP
You may also enjoy next week's article emphasizing the link between Peter Paul & Mary and Led Zeppelin on account of both bands used guitars and had a singer with long blond hair. (It turns out They Might Be Giants is a Led Zeppelin but Motorhead is a Peter Paul & Mary. That surprised me.)
So Wilco is classic rock and Radiohead is esoteric and the two are different enough that some bands are Radioheads and some are Wilcos, but Wilco is the American Radiohead and both are the new R.E.M.?
It seems I misunderstood. You wrote "he has never rocked on a single recording," which I took to mean, "he has never rocked on a single recording."
And Tom Waits covered "Danny Says" which doesn't rock but sounds good, Waits-style.
Miller wouldn't tell you if he didn't care.
I offer "Gin-Soaked Boy" and "Telephone Call From Istanbul" in retort.
"Chour keyboard is so polluted, choo can't even type a firstie."
I've got most of Stan Ridgeway's stuff, but only have "Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man" by Gualalcanal Diary. What else from them should I look for?
Most of Peter Case's career probably qualifies as "should have been bigger," although I guess the Plimsouls were "big" at one point.
In the last 5 or so years, the Len Price 3 should have been massive.
I found Bang On A Can to be a good entry point when I was checking out modern classical music. Their "I Buried Paul" from Renegade Heaven jumps off from that bit of music the Beatles tacked on at the end of "Strawberry Fields Forever." They also released a live version of Eno's Music for Airports.
I'm also a big fan…
I saw at least one sold out Squeeze concert at Nassau Coliseum in the early or mid 80's, so for at least a short while, they hit the very big time.
I called up Mark Ellen, but he wasn't really in.
