The case you're making is interesting, but it seems solely based on Eddie's lead work and David's high kicks.  It's ignoring the big dumb riffs, soaring harmonies, and fat choruses.  Those things are why early Van Halen is memorable/good and not just a vehicle for fret-wankery.

Personal preference, but I can't stand Freeman.  He sounds ridiculous to me, and not in a rock way, but exactly in a "that dude sounds like a muppet pretending to be a punk rocker" way.  I'm glad they don't let him sing too often.

Maybe context is making this more obvious to me than it is to you.  Heller is the resident metal, punk and hard-hard-rock guy here.  He clearly knows from sloppy, deranged vocals; he listens to millions of bands whose singers are technically inept on a good day, but said bands would work much less well with much…

He sounds like a surprisingly talented homeless guy in that acapella.  He's not the kind of golden-throated god that would front all the hair bands that ripped off VH later on - Coverdale, Hagar, etc.  Doesn't have the range, timbre or sense of pitch.  But he sounds better.

I'll expand on that.  The insane off-balance chemistry this whole article about is utterly missing with Hagar.  He's competent to a fault.  He's a rock 'n roll machine in the worst sense.  He's boring and soulless, and he made this band boring and soulless (if also, occasionally, toe-tappingly pleasant).
