I like to think that the moral ambiguity of the characters is a reflection of our own real world difficulty in determining who has moral high ground.  I'm guessing most of us live in the developed west, and are thus parasitically dependent on the productivity of people living shorter, more desperate lives in

The biggest problem with vampire!Elena is definitely the sire bond.  Because viewers never know whether to trust what she is saying, and the writers want to hold onto the ambiguity that fuels Damon's insecurity, she can only come across as two dimensional.  I suspect that this season will be better (or worse) on

Indeed, she seemed pretty upset about both Dean and Chris dying.  It doesn't make sense that she would be so horrified over Chris if she was just going to serve him up to Klaus anyway.

I imagine a series of fanfics is already frantically being written based on your scenario.  Jeremy's arms can't stay empty for long, now that they've been released from their emo-hoodie prison.

Not saying she's as bad as Klaus or Stefan by a long shot, but I think she actually told her mother that she does enjoy killing, that it's part of her basic nature that she can control as long as she is well fed on bloodbags.  She may have felt guilty afterwards, but vampires apparently all enjoy the kill.  Even Elena

I'm with you.  I'm betting he's actually Silas, he wants to resurrect his long dead girlfriend, and the grave he leads them to is hers.  Bet we see Qetsiyah at some point, too.  Question is, is he playing them all with this talk of the cure?  Or is there really a cure and the endgame of this season is turning Damon or

It's got to be hard to value human life as highly when you live lifetimes and have seen the bloodshed and violence of people killing each other in the millions over the centuries.  She's not that bad yet, but maybe being a vampire has given her a taste of living outside the human moral code (she's killed and compelled

I don't think the sire bond is done — Damon does not look to be leaving Mystic Falls, and I thought the crucial ingredients to "breaking" it were to tell her to never think of him again, to be happy, and then to leave.  Apparently, every time you run into your sire, you take the most recent thing they say to be what

olaf78  — I can see where you (and many others) are coming from.  It's just become clear to me that we are watching different shows starting with episode 1x2.  It's a turning point for interpretation.  I could respond to your critiques below, but I'm not sure it would do much for either of us because we differ on this

no TV and no beer   I appreciate your apology.  I know how difficult it is get context from internet discussions.  I think I picked the wrong time to set up an account here. I've lurked around and enjoyed the discussions I've read and thought it would be a good place to engage, but the intolerance of any dissenting

You provide a good, real world definition of compulsion and examples that support it.  But we have no idea what vampiric compulsion feels like, how it rewrites one's desires and thoughts, how much of your original desires and thoughts remain. If compulsion actually changes what you want, your basic desires, then there
