It might partially have to do with not being British, given how much they are a part of the pop culture in the UK, but it also has to do with nostalgia for the old series in general.  The Daleks are from just the second serial back in 1963 after all, and back then they probably seemed much more serious then today.

Not only that, but its predecessor position was in a Monty Python sketch:

I'm not sure it would have been much of a 'cash cow' in the Eighties, really.  Doctor Who in the US at the time was on local public television stations, right?  If so, there is no way local PBS members were shelling out tons of cash for it.  If anything they were airing it because it was cheep.

@avclub-92a4841c9f86965effbc29fa6eae9f77:disqus :  Just to clarify, when British people talk about 'athletics', they mean track and field.  The stands at Wembley probably come too close to the field to put in a real track.

Security is a concern, and it would have made sense to talk about it if they had a bit more pregame coverage.  As it was it was a bit jarring to start off with terrorist talk and then jump right into the ceremony.

It's a bit bizarre that Costas complained about there not being a moment of silence for the victims of the Munich Olympics during the Parade of Nations while his network chose to show Phelps' 500th interview this week instead of the 7/7 memorial.
