They did that a couple of years ago with X-Men Forever, penned by Claremont and (supposedly) continuing from his last issue on the book. It was canceled after 16 issues due to low sales and interest.

Personally, one of the things that initially made me interested in the show in its early seasons were the consistency and continuity. When there was doubt that they would get the next season or the next, there was something in the writing that is missing now that they know they can coast to the finish.
