Oh yeah, definitely, if you look back it does make sense. But it still feels a little jarring for it to suddenly be such a huge deal in the final season. But it's less that it's weird that this is what's become of the Obeservers, and more that it's weird that the importance of the alt-universe has been seemingly

I completely agree - the basis of the show's mythology has always been the other universe which is why, good (great, even) as this season has been, it's a little like "oh the OBSERVERS are the big thing now…. ok?"

So who do we think Donald is? This episode was good and fun and I'm happy to see the return of Lil O (especially after I read a great theory last season about how he was Henry from Earth II imbedded into our universe after his timeline was erased - a theory that is now mostly debunked, but it made me excited about his

It DEFINITELY felt really Navidson Record/House of Leaves-y, especially with the videotape guiding them through the "labyrinth." I hope to god that was intentional.

But maybe the "good" Observers (September + co.) attempted to erase Peter from existence so that he wouldn't create them and thus wouldn't bring about the end of the world, but because of Walter and Olivia's emotional ties, they were unsuccessful at getting rid of him completely.

I think that that would indeed be the best way to end it - with Peter dying in the frozen lake. Because if he is, in fact, the first Observer, that would make it so that they never existed and this bleak future would never come to be. And it would really tie in to the theme of the overall show that Peter is what this

They can't come from a previous timestream, though - September said pretty explicitly that they're human beings from the future. It seems likelier to me that they originated in our timeline from our people, given their interest in our characters.

I do like that point about the environment being ruined because the Observers ruined it - it really plays into the cyclical themes of the show, how we just keep making the same mistakes, how we are responsible for our actions, etc.

Maybe it was only a select group of them who wanted to erase him from the timeline - September and the other "good" Observers - because they thought removing him from existence with the machine would spare the future from the Observer attack.
