When I watched the movie as a kid, I always imagined an X-Wing pilot crash landing on the surface of the Death Star, putting on an oxygen mask and stumbling out of the wreck, realizing how fortunate they were to survive moments before the whole thing exploded.

He probably would've been alright in the prequels if he'd had a better script to work with.

From what I understand, he also thought it was going to be a one-film deal, and he had to be cajoled into coming back every time. Might have something to do with that.

They told John Ratzenberger that his audition went very well, and they told him they'd call him back, but they never did.
