Hmmm… I wonder if this is just a function of me being old. Or maybe just having unusual bars in my hometown or something. But I remember reading that in New York in the early 80's gay clubs were one of the best places to go see hip-hop. Might just be something about being more accepting of out-there music and so forth.

I'm kind of annoyed that Disqus screwed up my paragraph spacing. That was supposed to be the beginning of a new paragraph, and the "By which I mean gay bars?" was supposed to be its own line, OF COCK style. And now if I edit it people who read the original won't have the same aesthetic experience, and my art is

You like anything vaguely electronica-ish? House, jungle, dub, techno, acid jazz, whatever? (Confession: I can barely distinguish between half of those labels, I just like dancing to it.) At least in the 90's in Canada, gay bars were the place to be if you wanted to hear any of that.

Yeah, Japanese ultranationalism is weird. I've said this before here, but one of my former Japanese students, a 50ish hyper-educated man who read great works of English literature in his spare time, who had spent his 20's reading existentialist philosophy and was forced to become a lawyer by his ovebearing father…

Actually I think you're wrong on this. "acknowledging reality" = believing in it. Beliefs are how we understand the world, and yes, you should believe in evolution, because it's true. You shouldn't believe in YEC, because it's not. It's not that one's belief and the other isn't, it's just that one's true and one's not.

You should google the followups. He has since said that his support of the fatwa was kind of dumb, and that the media really shouldn't have taken the opinions of a musician who'd just converted as representative of Muslims in general. He's definitely not someone whose political beliefs you should be comfortable with,

Arthur, can I just say that ever since you popped up on these boards you've been one of the consistently clearest and least-full-of-shit people here? You've corrected me on a couple of mistakes about one thing or another, and waded in on some pretty contentious stuff, and always done so with real class. Props, man.

Ghandi wasn't a Hitler supporter, he didn't agree with fighting him, and thought the jews should basically commit mass suicide. He was a deeply, deeply flawed man with some poisonous ideas, but being a Nazi wasn't one of them.

Gibson's view of politics is essentially the same as Frank Miller's, so far as I can tell. Progress comes from sacrifice, by which he means killing cartoon villains, and then good things occur.

True story: about 15 years back my dad's somewhat-crazy-but-kind-of-a-genius former college room-mate and I were arguing pretty strongly over the connection between race and intelligence. (Hint: I was arguing for the side that would not get me shouted at on this website.) His strongest piece of evidence for blacks
