Yeah, high school seemed to be different, though.

This is something I got thinking about after I went home the other night—has anyone else noticed a difference in how they remember books they read during their free time as a kid compared to books they had to read for class?

For kid-friendly manga that isn't all "screaming ninja children", I'd recommend Yotsuba.  I'm reading it with my kid right now and it's really cute.

I'm a doctor and I've hated doctor shows since I quit watching ER.

I've been reading to my son since he was an infant, and I've been trying to figure out how to achieve sort of a balance with that—satisfying my desire to introduce him to all the books I loved as a kid while still keeping his attention span and interests in mind.

Not only do they still do those, but they're still handing out the Weekly Reader!

I think the stuff that Archaia puts out there for kids is really worth a mention.  The "Fraggle Rock" comics that they've done are really brilliant (and they're put together more like a higher-quality paperback than a comic book, which is a nice thing to have for younger kids.)

@Bluemoon—Yeah, but it's a 45-minute episode—you can't jam in backstory for every minor character before it becomes ridiculous.@avclub-c701a997d9bef627835b036efb4eca63:disqus

I've been reading some of the comics to my kid, and there's one story where he picks up a talking android/T. rex named Kevin.  I've been thinking that would make for an interesting companion.

I dunno—just watched the episode with my 6-year-old son (with all the spaceships, dinosaurs, and giant robots it might as well have been a pile of little boy cocaine) and the rape threat just kind of went over his head.  It was just one of those things that Very Bad Guys say—at 6 years old he doesn't know what rape is
