If anything Vaughn is a precursor to the gunfighter looking for redemption you'd find in later Westerns like The Shootist or the Wild Bunch.  I like the choice of making him afraid behind the bragadocious demeanor he's "supposed" to have around fellow gunfighters lest he be thought of as weak or able to be taken…

I don't see him as a crime boss but rather a guy who has information, keeps people's money under the guise of banking and then sets the money players against each other so he can keep the money
