Am I the only person who about halfway through the film realised that the ending was obviously going to be him spinning his top and us not knowing how it falls? I'd already decided that I couldn't be bothered to jump through the hoops that the film wanted me to since it was so obviously engineered to make the audience

I think metacommentary is the right word. Pale Fire functions in rather the same way, being in some ways a commentary on the pointlessness of the type of textual exegesis that the form of the novel takes.
