There was a Road Runner cartoon where Coyote made a deadfall.  When he pulled open the trapdoor, the rock pile didn't fall.  So, he gets under it and starts poking it with a stick.  A few pebbles start to fall, and he holds up a Coyote-sign "What in Heaven's Name Am I Doing?"

"Hey, George, Mr. O'Bannion said not to worry about that fat guy pressing charges, he had me and Sgt. O'Shaughnessy explain to him that he'd be wasting his time."

If the show had continued from the end of Season 2, I wonder if it would have been something like the Stand?  It was clear that Carter had no interest in doing a show set in a post-apocalyptic world, but it's also clear that that was what happened at the end of Season 2.

@notteddanson:disqus I never laughed so hard as when John Malkovitch chopped up that guy in Burn After Reading… I quite unnerved my "house-guest" at the time.

I like Justified, but it's basically Coogan's Bluff the series and there's a reason why the star of that movie was having an argument with an empty chair at the Republican convention.
