He reminds of an earlier era of directors.
On the one hand: Memento, Inception, Interstellar
On the other: the Batman trilogy
I don't consider myself a typical "AVClubber". I'm mostly here for the (sometimes) thoughtful discussion of film and music, not the cynicism and rebellion.
I had this issue to a degree with a few of the roles. I had to add my own humanity and guesses about his character that were only minimally alluded to in the performance. It's an issue of perspective, though. The film isn't told from society's perspective, and… and that society was one that was allowing that system of…
I'm not sure what I'd consider his "worst", because I see a lot to like in it. The Darjeeling Limited is possibly my least favorite (maybe TGBH), but it also looks fantastic and has a nice family story and world at the heart of it that feels the most real.
Scott Pilgrim was one of the most insane (impacting and entertaining) film experiences the year it was released. The technicality alone was awesome.
Zero's role in the film is complicated, because M. Gustave dominates so much of it, and Zero as a lobby boy is a little reserved.
I agree about the framing.
I have a complicated response to it.
I actually kinda agree with him about Toy Story 3, which had a strong beginning and ending, but suffered from formulaic sequel buttons in the middle that were redundant to the second film. Also, its representation of daycare facilities angered me because I used to work in childcare.
I thought some of the minor characters played their roles as caricatures, which I disliked for how good much of the rest of it was. The soundtrack is also highly problematic. Still, much of the film works, especially for how heavy and yet still realistic it was. It helps that it was based on a true slave narrative.
agreed.
I genuinely disliked Gone Girl, too. What a bunch of nonsense.
If Django is ranked higher than 12 Years a Slave… I am going to be upset.
yeah, there were at least a handful of other films more deserving than Lincoln. Zero Dark Thirty was excellent.
It's mostly set earlier, at a time you kinda remember.
TMV is the first band I think of when I think of self-indulgent bands.
Coldplay could be considered this… they were more rock before, but they still fit the broad category.
I don't understand their newest material. Half of the 2nd Law was alright, and a lot of it actually was understandable even if it wasn't great, but the new stuff I've heard is just annoying and weird.
the part in Sparta showed sometimes you need a balance
