One of my brothers-in-law is like this exactly, except he's in his late 40s.  He simply cannot stand being left out of any conversation so he'll say "that reminds me of…" with the topic switching to something he wants to talk about, and that topic is always him.

Yes, and it's pretty dire in this area.  We were looking for apartments for about 7 months and couldn't find anything remotely affordable that didn't suck.
