Food is a pretty important motif in the movie; fine food represents the glamorous perks of the mob. Hell, when Henry goes into witness protection, his chief complaint is the lack of good food.
I'm getting started on my fall/winter goal of delving into dark, pessimistic, misanthropic philosophy books, and I'm beginning with Jim Crawford's Confessions of an Antinatalist. He supports what is obviously a very off-putting ideology for some people, but the writing is sharp and, sometimes, really heart-wrenching.
I re-read The God of Small Things, and it's just as gorgeous, bizarre, enveloping, powerful, and fucked up as I remember.
