There was also the deserter in the very first episode who was spared by the white walkers (the walker lobbed his buddy's head at him, then let him go)… not sure if there's any connection there but they haven't always killed everyone on sight.

I saw Art School Confidential years after attending art school but the scene where main dude and his new friend are critiquing all other classmates (which I believe is the based on the 4-page ASC comic?) was bang-fucking-on. Right down to the mom and the well-dressed preppy dude ("what's with the weirdo?").
