I am as well, although I couldn't tell you why. I think perhaps it is because my name doesn't allow for shortening and so I was always envious of people who had their "real" name and a shortened, nickname version they could use.
I think we react negatively to her because she doesn't act. She sits and takes what comes to her and is a pawn in another person's game. Arya makes bold moves. They may not be smart moves and they may be rash but she's not willing to sit back and let things happen to her, which is why she is a more enjoyable…
It's always nice to have a less formal version of your name to go by.
