I disagree with the "rightly tried to take Rick out" bit and the fact was, Rick and his group had done all of the heavy lifting in riding the prison of zombies and as such deserve a bit of reward, though I'm not saying taking half the food was the morally just thing to do, at least he didn't kill them all on sight…

The guy had just taken a swing at Rick with a baseball bat. And I certainly think that clearing out a separate cell block and giving them half the food was more than reasonable. Umm, yes the Hermit did have a gun drawn on him. And besides, it wasn't Rick who killed him, it was Michonne. Rick was trying to talk him down and had put his gun away. I've already said I'll make no pretenses for Michonne being a good person.
