I didn't find it surprising that he went back to his house.  It makes sense that he would go back to check on whatever stuff he thinks that looters might be after, and also (and more importantly) make sure that no one has found his daughter.

As soon as Axel's scene started, I knew what he was up to and was convinced that reanimated shrieking girl from Tyrese's crew was gonna off him.  I was sad that he didn't die, but at the same time sort of glad if he can keep delivering lines like calling Carol a lesbian.  Hilarious.
