My dad had a collection of Herman strips—the closest thing to a book he's owned my entire life. I don't know why he had it, I never saw him read it, but damn if I didn't enjoy going through that thing. Unger had such distinctive line work.
As a 15 year old reading that finale for the first time, I was supremely disappointed. I wanted another punchline!

As someone who has grown up reading newspaper strips, and still finds them to be a great source of humor, I was really pleased to see this project. The Watterson thing is a huge get; good for them.

The issue is that, traditionally, comics creators don't get paid royalties or any other fees for their creation. They're paid upon delivery of the product; the comic studio reaps any further profit. So sales of Mantlo's writings may increase as the movie approaches, but he's unlikely to see any of that.
