Alice is the only movie where I spent half the time convinced I had fallen asleep after hitting play. Of all the surrealist movies I've seen, that one is by far the closest to simulating an actual dream.

Agreed, I really enjoyed the remake for the reasons you mentioned, and because it was just a beautiful movie aesthetics-wise. Every other shot was incredibly gorgeous.
