For just a second, I thought the writer's were about to do something smart — ie, maybe reveal the aliens ignored animal life, and that the humans (having figured this out) were using the dog to trigger the trap knowing a walker wouldn't shoot at it. But no. That would have been clever and original.

Luckily, the aliens are only attracted to evil heat sources — like flares set off by bad guys. Good heat sources like cooking fires and car engines are dutifully ignored.

No, he's just someone who wants his dark post-apocalyptic action/adventure entertainment to actually be, you know, dark. And have adventure. And be entertaining.
