To be fair, if they were very Catholic, maybe they didn't understand the phrase?

I feel like it works if you set it in the 1970s - these girls are singing music that they heard when they were little. It's not ideal, but that makes sense to me.

For some reason, Marta is the most difficult character to get right nowadays, apparently. I don't know if I've ever seen a production where the director understood who she was. Angel Desai in the 2006 revival was particularly terrible, but Anika Noni Rose was not good either. Marcy Harriell in the John Barrowman-led

I had the same problem with the singing as I did the acting. It's hard enough to find skilled New York musicians/actors/singers, but trying to find them in Ohio (where this production started out) is nearly impossible, apparently. The acting and singing was often at a community theatre-level. And there's a reason

I don't dislike the song at all; on the contrary, it was my go-to ballad all through high school and college. I think it's a lovely melody, and sharp lyric writing.

I saw this in theatres when it was playing, and I agree with some of this review - in this concert presentation, it definitely can seem more like sequences linked together than a complete, unified show. However, I don't necessarily think that's a problem with the writing. The original Hal Prince production used that

I think Sorkin would be a terrible fit for Follies. The more realistic and concrete Follies gets, the worse it gets, and Sorkin and surreal don't mesh.
