Well, I don't know that I would agree that any of those musicals are horror (except maybe Sweeney Todd). But you are right that sci-fi musicals are usually pretty bad. I saw a musical version of The Last Starfighter, and I wanted it to be good, and it wasn't.

Just FYI - don't know if you're aware of this, but all the actors in the stage version do pop up as part of the plant, with their faces on flowers, during "Don't Feed the Plants".

The plant destruction does go on a bit long, but I'm happy we have it all, since the effects work is literally astounding.

Especially because he wasn't just a lyricist, but a true story man - the structure and shape of Beauty and the Beast is due entirely to him. He probably could've made Pocahontas and Hunchback into masterpieces.
