I'm most like David, at least on the surface (30-something gay guy), but I don't really identify with him at all.  For one, I wasn't raised religious and I don't have that baggage.  I probably identify most with Claire, but I admire some aspects of Nate (his "be cool, dude" attitude can be attractive at times) and I

And was this death really unexpected?  The woman lives next to a golf course.  So obviously, while one would expect her to die of flesh-eating disease, she ends up with a surprise drive to the head.

That comment needs a rimshot!

How about ¡Hot Shot!  Concepciòn?  Throw in a little Latin flavour.

blurb under photo on main page has an innapropriate apostrophe in "heroine's" (plural, not possessive)

me too, man, me too.

To me it seems the book is more about mood than plot.  From this review, it seems maybe they got that part right.  Small town, going nowhere, feeling trapped, knowing you're heading down the wrong path but unable to change course…

Not to mention that if you're a Morrissey fan all you can hear every time someone mentions a name is "Now my heart is full." (or if you're an Animaniacs fan "What're we going to do tomorrow, Pinky?"

Quel = which.  you're looking for Que (more formal or literary) or Qu'est-ce que c'est (informal/spoken).
Good job on dont vs donc.  Formidable!

My partner had trouble with the Billy/Brenda scene too.  He has a sibling with mental illness (bad enough to be hospitalized, too).  It hit really close to home for him.  Actually, he's rewatching SFU for the first time since his sibling was hospitalized, so he's seeing all the Billy stuff with fresh eyes.

Yes!  Vaseline on the face. This is what I was trying to recall in my comment upthread.  Hilarious shit.

Oh yes, stripping off the earrings, doesn't she put vaseline on herself or something like that too?  the baseball bat.  it's fantastic stuff.  Do you think it's kind of racist though?  Like "Latinas are only a hairbreadth away from turning into brawlers even when they're actually suburban wives/mothers/nurses?"

Brenda being Brenda:  Last episode she praised Nate for being the big strong man who protects his girl.  This episode he's not sensitive enough.  Sure she was happy when he was pushing Billy in the casino but now she wants Nate to roll over and accept her way of dealing with Billy.

yeah, i like SFU too much to black out 20 min into every episode.

Holy shit, so we can call out other posters in our comments, with links to their profiles?

Also, your pic got squashed.  Insult to injury, I should say.

The best Stephen Merritt albums have always been the ones I've edited for myself.  I find he's always been inconsistent.  69 love songs, for instance, is a mediocre 3 album set but an excellent 20-track album. So if the main criticism here is inconsistency, then it seems par for the course.

you got dead ears, mate!

Sony makes a pair of in-ear buds that have play/pause and volume controls on the wire, as well as integrated mic so you can use it with iPhone (or in my case, iPod touch with Skype… fuck paying for calls). OK sound, not too expensive. I've replace mine once already, not because they wore out but because I stepped on
