I used to not take Scientology to seriously, more or less as a punch-line, if you will… I did take their little personality test once, and gone in to see their 'free movie' with my girlfriend, after which there was a little speech. (we were separated, and after the film, when the guy came out to speak, there was

XTC "Skylarking" with the opening swoon of "Summer's Cauldron" followed by the delirious 'Grass"…

Oh god, that really breaks my heart…

"Winter's Tale' isn't produced often because it IS SO FUCKING LONG and has all that naff 'Shepherd' crap inserted in it that the power's that be were always insisting on at that time..

I think there is a danger in a charismatic, gifted educator performing repetitive, ludique, educational discusion being confused with 'great television' let alone 'the greatest'.

I'd love to know what happened to 'Jeff Ehrlinger' in the wheelchair—

Dead on on Jaresh-Inyo:

Paradise Lost was perhaps the best end to a two-parter I've seen on Trek…

I quite like Enterprise, but the episodes named are truly stinkers… I find 'ANiS' worse because it find it so poorly written as to make the character of Archer absolutely incompetent for his job- Not just a bit course and fumbling his way, but a stubborn idiot… the rest is typically lame Trek attempts at humour, but

God, what a Masterpiece that was! It's not A Night in Sickbay, though!

I simply don't think it measures the quality of women's roles in any meaningful way. It is possible to fulfill the qualifications with a total lack of sincerity (not to mention quality) and it is possible to make art that is very positive for women, even feminist, without fulfilling the requirements.

I quite agree on your point about evolving technology making this sort of thing dramatic (though Battle of terror did it better, and arguably more realistically— space battles being likely to be less like dogfights and more like Battleship), also that TOS is much darker and more complex than it is generally given

Do not kid yourself that Roddenberry was crowned 'Creative Consultant' and neutered out of some great artistic principle. It was TV, work for hire, and he didn't own it. It was money, plain and simple, and the suits didn't want an idealist slowing down their ability to crank out product.

Valid points as w-far as they go, but I think you're off on the money aspect… All the 'purer' shows (with the arguable exception of Enterprise) made more money (for various reasons) than DS9.

While I enjoy Bechdel as a little thought experiment and appreciate its intentions, I think it is a pretty poor metric overall.

And my baby sister's birthday is May 29th!

Sorry @avclub-9fda17cadd97a91b294831b496bcb3d0:disqus … What is this 'context menu'? I can't seem to find anything called that…

Thanks, @avclub-9fda17cadd97a91b294831b496bcb3d0:disqus . Truly appreciated!

Long-form, Jaresh.. That ad in the local 'Money (that doesn't exist) Saver' paper ain't gonna do it…

Oh, I agree— Bur one would think they'd be mining, and protecting the genome of more exotic and adored things than, say, parsley (whence that particular example..)
