That's honestly one of my favorite things about the book. Her perspective is a limiting factor, both physically and emotionally. We only see what she sees and we're only told what she figures out. And she's not that good at figuring things out. I love unlovable characters.

This is a great example of backstory evolving organically. I can't tell if I'm agreeing with Tasha or not, but almost all stories need backstory, it's just that they don't need to be overt. Hunger Games works just fine because you figure out the world as it happens, without a preamble intoning the past. Something like

Oh, you'd better believe that's a paddlin'.
