What really bugs me is that Crash is such a movie split in terms of quality. I rewatched it a few days ago and was suprised at how good a lot of it was. On an individual, scene to scene level, some of those scenes were better than anything in Brokeback.

If this ends up being the prevailing battle, then I wouldn't be surprised if they pull another film out of left field once again, like they did to avoid any sort of political implications in 2014.

I was just about to mention both of those. Honestly I'd say it's the first time we've seen a Great movie (a la Brokeback Mountain) vs an incredible movie (a la No Country for Old Men).
Both will probably enter the pop culture lexicon, and the Academy might protest the whole fight by choosing a film out of left field,
