I think the speech was about as organic as a Sorkin monologue gets.  Jeremy had been going over the problem in his mind for the entire day, indexing and defining it, getting more and more frustrated as his attempts at reasoning through the fight failed.  The poker hand gave him the perfect opportunity to vent

I think the story is somewhat redeemed by the fact that neither of them really want to be fighting, or to have the upper hand in the relationship.  They're just dealing with a stack of baggage they've accidentally stacked between themselves and sexy shirt time.
