I always saw the plantation scene as the last chance to turn back from the abyss.  The French are there as phantasms trying to warn the Americans away, tempting them with the relative peace to be found in abandoning colonial or ideological ambition.  Eventually Sheen pushes on anyway, and seals everyone's fate.
