As much as I hate Elmo taking over Sesame Street almost completely, Kevin Clash is a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor that gets watered down immensely by the curriculum of CTW.  In interviews, outside of the scripted mess of Sesame Street, Clash/Elmo is an amazing ad-libber.  I'm very curious to see this…

I want to say that Kermit the Frog was actually named for Mr. Love.  He was Jim Henson's mentor.

It's even worse than you say, the three actors weren't just fired because they wanted a raise, they were fired because they want SAG minimum wage (scale)!

The financial motive is that the split season just "happens" to fall in two ratings periods, allowing them to artificially inflate their average network rating during the time-frame that the industry uses to set their ad rates.

I Was really sad that "Save Me Barry!" was not one of the Stray Observations. :(

Lower budget
The budget for the series was actually cut when Moffat took over, but it looks so much better now because Davies couldn't turn a script in on time to save his life, so all the money went into overtime.
