Paul Mother-Fucking Williams
I'm glad Phantom of the Paradise made this list. Williams isn't a tremendously gifted actor (see: Smokey and the Bandit I - III, Hawaii 5-0, The Love Boat) but he does smarmy with the best of them, and he's perfect for Swan. Of course it probably doesn't hurt his case that the rest of the…
I was so scared of Chucky as a kid that I had to get rid of the My Buddy doll my mom had gotten me and I couldn't go into the video store for several years.
My hopes for this show were not high. I'm surprised, but glad, to hear it's worth a look.
I like the idea of a crochety pig flying planes in 1920's Italy much more than I wound up liking Porco Rosso.
@Crackity: My only exposure to the Louvins is "Satan is Real", so I'll take it on faith that the sermonizing/moralizing present therein isn't representative of their oeuvre. I still think it's hard not to acknowledge the disparity between their approach to "The Christian Life" and McGuinn's.
Did this show …
stop sucking after the first episode? I think Danny McBride is pretty funny, but it kind of seemed like a one-note premise propped up by the central conceit that the word "fuck" is really, really funny.
I know it's still early days on the road to Nashville, but I hope Rabin gets around to giving Townes his due.
It's such a great cover that I really wish I'd heard it before I knew the original. I think I'll never be able to fully appreciate it because I already had such an attachment to Carr's version that I can't dissociate the two.
The Christian Life
I think "Dippety Dog cartoon drawl" is a bit harsh; the obvious irony and condescension in McGuinn's approach to the song are what make it such a great cover. It's so sunny and completely subverts the original, which, to my mind, makes it more interesting than the more straightforward or reverent…
Maybe it's just my personal, emotional attachment to the song, Jim, but that's just plain wrongheaded. If there's a more affecting song about the pangs of regret for a lost love, I haven't heard it, and it sure as hell isn't Hot Burrito #2.
CK was a tremendous letdown for me. I don't want to see it again for the first time, I'd just rather not have seen it. Then I could go on blindly glorifying it as a high-water mark for an amazing actor as opposed to roughly his 10th or 15th best film (better than Casino Royale, but not as good as Transformers: The…
Ocarina of Time is an excellent call. I remember riding around on the horse and just being awed by the size of the world and the freedom it provided. An amazing gaming experience. Ditto Mario 64.
These Things
I wholeheartedly support Noel's choice. I finally got a copy of Withnail for Xmas, and while I still find it incredibly funny and affecting, no rewatching will ever compare to the wonder of that first time, simply because its pleasures were so unexpected.
Last year, I was seeing this girl who was a fan of Ed Norton but had never seen Primal Fear. I hadn't seen it since it was in theaters, and when we rented it I was utterly floored by the cheesiness of basically every scene without Norton.
Yes, YES!
Thanks to ads like these, 8-year-old-me harrassed my Uncle about his 2-pack / day habit for the 30 seconds before he smacked me in the face and told me he'd do whatever the fuck he wanted. From that day forward I was totally sold on smoking and beating young children.
I'm not sure the "Big Beef and Cheddar" line would be that funny in anyone else's hands, but my god does she sell it. One of my favorite 30 Rock moments.
Lovely and/or cancerous, Tom.
The BBC Dragon's Den is actually pretty entertaining. A lot of the contestants are pretty dim, in which case it's fun to watch them get eviscerated. Occasionally, though, they have some pretty brilliant ideas.
