I always believed that Wash died because he had no arc going forward. The one seed that had been planted in the series was he and Zoe having a kid, which might have worked on a weekly TV show, but wasn't going to work for a series of movies.

Would Big Numbers qualify? How about the last decade or so of Cerebus? Most comics projects that have received enough publicity to make them a fit for MWoF are financially successful, no matter how much they suck. I'm thinking of things like Secret Wars 2, Spider-Man #1, or The Dark Knight Strikes Again.
