We wouldn't have this problem if the word pop hadn't been assassinated all those years ago.  At some point in the 60s someone decided that rock and pop were opposites of each other, and started using "rock" to mean "music they like" and "pop" to mean "that bullshit enjoyed by all the people who don't get it."

Word on "the exception that proves the rule."  In this context prove means "test," and it is meant to imply that the rule itself is a shame.  Noting that a rule has an exception and then saying it "proves the rule" is just an asinine cliche.
