Out of curiosity, where are the other places you've looked (re: BOYZ N THE HOOD)? That film was a big deal when it came out but my impression is that its stock has fallen in tandem with Singleton's career.

I don't know what to tell you, man. SHAWSHANK wouldn't likely make my top *200* of the '90s. I just don't think it's very good (and I revisited it fairly recently, on 16 Jan 2010). Apparently the other voters felt likewise. Its place atop the IMDb list has always baffled me.

SPIRITED AWAY = wrong decade.

I didn't wind up voting for it but I agree that it's a much darker film than is generally credited, if that's what you mean by misunderstood.

Can't speak for the others but I don't have any favorites that I think are crap. There's no such thing as objective excellence; voting from the heart is the only way to do this. It's not that I recognize certain films are good but just don't like them (or vice versa). I may acknowledge that they're well-made in

There's a degree of mawkishness that a lot of us find off-putting. Examples: Andy playing classical music over the P.A. system; that iconic crane shot after he escapes in which he's stretching his arms wide and gazing rapturously to the heavens. Also, as a big fan of King's novella (which I'd read years before the

Several of these filmmakers will be getting their due in tomorrow's supplement of beloved near-misses, you'll be glad to know.

Unfortunately there was no Metacritic yet back then, so I can't prove you're mistaken without doing more legwork that I care to. But just to cite one example off the top of my head, OUT OF SIGHT won the National Society of Film Critics' prize for Best Picture in 1998.

It was actually left off. Film critics are not super-high on that movie and never have been. It got respectful but far from rapturous reviews when originally released.

There will be no explanation or rationalization. The list is what it is, based on the films we love most. Tomorrow's article just sees each of us write about four films we love that didn't make the cut. (And if memory serves, nobody went to bat for LAMBS, JURASSIC PARK or SHAWSHANK. We really just don't like those
