You know what makes Sen. Lockhart a truly unbelievable character? His ability to stand up to the CIA.
If the writers made it known which political party the President/Vice President belonged to and who controlled the Senate, it would allow viewers to fill in the gaps themselves. Otherwise, characters like Sen. Lockhart are blank slates.
It's even funnier because they're both so mediocre.

Having read Eddie Huang's memoir, Fresh Off The Boat, it's is obvious why he clashed with Travis so much. Travis tried to present himself as something he was not, an expert.
