I think the biggest hole in this theory is they haven't spoken in 30 years, and Opal appears to be mid- to late-teens.

Not sure where you draw the line at "too fantastic," but perhaps you'd be more interested in the Dreamblood Duology? No god characters and the magic (Narcomancy) is more simple. It's basically a political thriller in an Egyptian-esque setting, with multiple POV characters.
