LA Confidential seems way too low - probably one of the handful of masterpieces from the decade.

Barry Pepper's performance deserves a mention. He completely bossed it, and this in a movie that had universally strong performances. His character was the most resonant for me.
Having gone from heightened anticipation on the back of the trailers, to contemplative disappointment as a result of this review and Rottentomatoes, I emerged from the movie borderline satisfied. The lower expectations I had going in likely contributed to them being exceeded.
