The issue I have with Ira's comment is that a dream sequence can work if you can commit to it. Buffy had one of the best dream sequences in Primeval, an episode all about the five leads dreaming, and it was strong enough to end a season on.

I think it's more that they are super-protective of Boo. Boo's too nice, so they went overboard to protect her from the perceived creep. Or else Sasha's absence creates a bitch void that must be filled.
