If you honestly can't see the difference between a work created under the complete understanding that it's a work for hire using corporate-owned characters (WHATEVER HAPPENED…) and a work produced under the impression that the result would be owned by the creator (WATCHMEN), I don't really see any point in arguing.

I'd argue that it first got really bad with SPY HARD.  That, or DRACULA, DEAD AND LOVING IT.
