mr_windup is right, I think—Nolan had to have meant something by the constant references to the "auto pilot not working."  Then at the end, right before France, we see Fox discovering that Wayne fixed the auto pilot "months ago," meaning Bruce could just jump out of the thing whenever he wanted and it'd fly the bomb
