His motivation wasn't clear to me, either.  I thought maybe he was running interference for Letterman, but that seems too beneath his stature.  But if it's true that "papers were signed", then that seems like lawsuit territory.  So I'm not sure.  Mere script convenience, I guess.

Well, I'll say it — I enjoyed Season 8.  It was the weakest of the bunch, no doubt, and the inability to find a coherent character arc for Nellie torpedoed many scenes and a couple of entire episodes.  But I found I still enjoyed hanging out with these characters, and rather than wring my hands about where it was all…

That was a riot.  You definitely got the sense he knew how he was coming across to them, but rather than recalibrate he decided to just go with it.
