Watching it again I was surprised at how incredibly violent that opening scene was. I mean, those musicians getting gunned down, with bullet holes and blood sprays, yet all presented as humor (the guy grabbing the just-killed guy's cake, only to instantly die). Wasn't anyone thinking about the children.

Nah, it was nonsense. But by at least making the effort to handwave it away, you felt like they'd sort of tried to met you halfway, so you didn't worry about it. The rest of the movie seemed like it had about 1/1000 the budget it really needed to tell the story it wanted, and was actually pretty dull.
