Teadoust, Sturgeon's Law (90% of everything is crap) applies to every genre. If you're looking for sci-fi and horror to warm the cockles of your literary heart, it's out there. MPBC above me makes some good suggestions, to which list I would add Ursula LeGuin.

I hate this commercial so goddamn much, I actually cannot change the channel or turn off the TV when it comes on, because I want to revel in despising it.

Frankly, given the laundry list of things that she didn't like about the movie, I'm surprised that she enjoyed it.
