It may not matter to the larger point that Chase intended to make with the finale, but I agree with the point @Reagan2:disqus   is making. And I'm not even saying definitively that Tony died, but it doesn't make sense to me to reject an interpretation because it robs it of the mystery or its too simple.

Its often said that season 6 represented Chase's original vision of the show which he could only do after the success of the earlier seasons. I don't really think thats the case though, after reading Sepinwall's book as well as some of Chase's past interviews. By all accounts he seemed to originally want the show to

"Yeah but this review right here goes through almost every scene in the final episode and how it's all part of a consistently thematic whole."

1. Like season 6 as a whole, I have mixed feelings on it.
2. I lean more towards yes.
3. Six Feet Under

I said it in one of the previous writeups, but the way the show closes out the New York/New Jersey war always seemed rushed to me. It was like Chase didn't plan ahead enough and needed to wrap it up in the quickest way he could think of so suddenly Butch is ready to betray Phil when he showed no signs of doing this

But the fact of the matter is, by crafting an intentionally mysterious and opaque final 5 minutes Chase had to know he would risk overshadowing everything else he did. He seems generally surprised about it in the recent interview he did, but it seems like common sense that such a controversial ending would dominate

What happened with Tracee is another good example. Tony clearly has a problem with Ralph killing her, but based on the mafia code he did little wrong so Tony has to justify his anger by stating that he "disrespected the Bing".

@avclub-884c4beddd8c98bb3b016bdfcc1bcdf8:disqus Oh, I agree, but I was responding to the argument Sepinwall made that he doesn't think the finale represents Tony's death purely based on what the show has done before.

Tony and Janice share some of the same negative qualities, but I think Tony especially in the earlier episodes has more likable/relatable qualities. Point of view is also a powerful thing and living with a character through their struggles can do a lot to endear you to them. Not to mention that Tony can provide a

@avclub-a6bba5fb3d3ee4e21c5ac2cbc8b94130:disqus I've read that interview before and I have a hard time believing that Chase actually thinks that. Tony killed Pussy and tried to kill his mother because they had posed very real, direct threats to him. His mother had been conspiring to kill him and the info Pussy was
